About Art in Classrooms

Encouraging art activities in classrooms “determines the child’s individuality and uniqueness” (Salmon, 2008, p.461) as each child has a different perspective. The artwork children creating include their own personal “ideas, wishes, feelings and emotions” (Adu-Agyem, Enti & Peligah, 2009, p.152). According to Salmon (2008) although thinking is invisible, it is important for children to create visually using their imagination (p.458). Therefore children should be creating “two-dimensional, three-dimensional and four-dimensional art” (ACARA, 2011, p.16) , by exploring with a range of natural and non-natural materials, which contributes to their “artistic development” (Swarm, 2008, p.37).
For children Strauch-Nelson (2012), believes that it is important to integrate art with nature in early childhood environments as it allows children to be creativity and innovative (p.33). Incorporating art with nature, Malosh (2010) stats that it is an affective and effective tool, which further enriches, enhances and enlightens a child’s experience and development (p.28). Therefore art activities should include nature and natural materials.
